How long does it take to launch a private-label dog ear cleaner?

Roughly 10 to 14 weeks from first contact to stock on hand, using a stock bottle and sea freight. Most of that is not manufacturing — it is sampling, artwork approval and shipping. Knowing which blocks you control and which the factory controls is what keeps a launch on schedule.

The timeline, block by block

StageTypical timeWho controls it
1. Brief & reference product3–7 daysYou — posting the product you want matched. Courier transit to China is the real variable here.
2. Spec-matched sample7–10 daysFactory — from the day your reference arrives. Returned with an indicative landed cost.
3. Sample review & revision1–2 weeksYou — one revision round is normal; two is common.
4. Artwork & sign-off1–3 weeksYouand this is where most launches slip.
5. Production25–35 daysFactory — after artwork and formula are signed off.
6. Freight3–6 weeks sea
~1 week air
Route — plus customs clearance at destination.

Add tooling time on top if you specify a fully custom-moulded bottle. Ear finger-wipes run on a separate line, so a two-piece set needs both schedules aligned.

Four things that actually cause delays

In practice, launches rarely slip because a factory is slow. They slip for these reasons, in this order.

  1. Artwork. Production cannot start until labels are signed off, and artwork rounds sit entirely on the brand's side. A dieline supplied late, a legal review that takes two weeks, a last-minute logo change — each one pushes the whole schedule.
  2. Two suppliers for a two-piece set. If the ear cleaner and the ear wipes come from different factories, the slower one sets the launch date for the bundle. This is why sourcing both from one supplier matters more than it sounds.
  3. Compliance documents requested late. If your retailer asks for stability data or a Certificate of Free Sale after production has started, you may be waiting on testing that should have run in parallel. Ask for the document list on day one.
  4. A custom bottle decided halfway through. Switching from stock to custom mid-project restarts the packaging clock and usually the MOQ conversation too.

How to compress it — and what not to compress

Safe to compress:

  • Use a stock bottle for the first run. This removes tooling time entirely and keeps the MOQ low while you prove the SKU.
  • Have artwork ready in the correct dieline before sign-off, not after. Ask for the dieline at sampling stage, not at production stage.
  • Air-freight the first run only. Expensive per unit, but it can pull a launch forward by a month when a retail window matters.

Not safe to compress: stability and preservative-challenge testing. They take the time they take, and skipping them is how a product fails on shelf six months later.

Plan backwards, not forwards

The single most useful habit is to start from the date the product must be on shelf and work back. For a summer swim-season SKU — an after-swim ear rinse, for example — that means artwork locked in winter, stock landing in early spring, and therefore the first sampling conversation happening in autumn.

Brands that plan forwards from "let's look into this" almost always miss their first season.

Frequently asked

How long does the whole launch take?
Roughly 10–14 weeks with a stock bottle and sea freight. A custom-moulded bottle adds tooling time on top.
What delays launches most?
Artwork approval — it sits on the brand's side and blocks production. Second is sourcing a two-piece set from two suppliers.
How fast is a sample?
7–10 days from the day the reference product reaches the factory, returned with an indicative landed cost. Free; you cover the courier.
Can it be done faster?
Yes — stock bottle, artwork prepared in the correct dieline in advance, and air freight for the first run. Do not compress stability and preservative-challenge testing.
When should I start a seasonal SKU?
Work backwards from the on-shelf date. A summer product means artwork locked in winter and the first sampling conversation in autumn.
